Fiasco pitch for Coca Cola Vietnam. An insight into our process

More and more recently we have been approached by agencies and individuals to pitch for design work. We’re generally only to happy to oblige but never more so than when we were approached by Vietnam based design agency Rice Creative, who were looking to commission some illustrations for a Coca Cola project they were working on.

Coca Cola Vietnam were looking for some graphics for their cans to help promote a new music festival they would be putting on in the coming year. The brief was simple. Create a series of 4 different illustrations based on crowds, music and festivals. The rest was left up to our own interpretation.

Like with most pitches we take part in, the time frame for completed work was very short and in this case we had just a day to get our ideas together, packaged up and sent over to the agency in Vietnam. We had some reference images to work from but nothing more than some generic vectorised silhouetted crowd shots. Arms in the air. Band rocking out. You know the sort of thing.

We sat down in the morning and tried to find an angle and narrative for the four can designs. We wanted the four images to tie together in some way and decided on creating a fictitious band of creatures native to Vietnam. These cans would be used to advertise the festival to a solely Vietnamese audience and it was our feeling that the designs should include some Vietnamese references.

With this in mind, we set about working on characters for the band as well as some crowd options. Working with the can template and the various Coca Cola assets (logo, dynamic band, legal, ingredients etc) we created a series of illustrations that would work with the assets and incorporate these within the overall design.

The end result was a series of 4 illustrations that were different perspectives of the same gig therefore linking each design and following a loose narrative so they could work successfully as a series.

After a two day wait we were informed that the work had not been selected due to it not meeting legal requirements in Vietnam, a fact that was only made clear to us after we had submitted the work. We were disappointed to loose out on the work in this way but reassured by the fact that Coke had decided not to go with any of the designs submitted and decided to go down a different route.

Pitching is an integral part of gaining creative work and we’re always learning how to best approach pitches. What we’ve learnt is that you must be sure to always check the small print and if you’re working for a large global corporation such as Coca Cola, the legal requirements.
